International Credit Union Day Celebration at TVTFCU

The Tobacco Valley Teachers Federal Credit Union (TVTFCU) in Enfield recently celebrated International Credit Union Day with the theme of “Cooperation for a Prosperous World.” Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that provide an effective and viable alternative to for-profit financial institutions for more than 400 million members in over 100 countries worldwide. More than 67,000 credit unions exist globally, providing a variety of financial services for their members, recognized as a force for positive economic and social change.
Since 1948, International Credit Union Day® has been celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October. Each year, the international event affords the opportunity to remember credit unions’ proud history and promote awareness of and support for the credit union and financial cooperative difference.
This cooperative spirit has led to life-changing opportunities for people all over the world who have wanted to own a home or continue their education but were denied access by other financial institutions. In many parts of the world, people’s first taste of democracy is through their credit union, where “one member, one vote” is the governing structure. At its most basic level, a credit union is comprised of a group of people pooling their money to provide each other with affordable loans—it is literally people helping people. Any profit made by a credit union is returned to its members through higher savings rates and lower loan rates. Credit unions empower people, wherever they are in the world or in life, to take control of their financial future.
TVTFCU celebrated for an entire week by providing giveaways and refreshments for its members.
“We enjoy celebrating Credit Union Day with our members. Especially this year which marks our credit union’s 90th Anniversary. This is a day to show appreciation for our members as well as remember all the benefits the credit union movement has provided to individuals worldwide. It is also a day to recognize the hard work of our staff and volunteer board members,” said Cynthia Sikes, CEO/Manager for the Tobacco Valley Teachers Federal Credit Union.
